Allergy Testing
Allergy testing is commonly performed on chronically allergic pets with itchy skin and/or recurrent skin or ear infections after other problems have been ruled out such as bacterial infection, skin parasites parasites and food allergy. Pets with allergic sensitivities suffer needlessly with excessive itching or chronic infections and may be given improper treatment if their allergy is not recognized and diagnosed correctly. Our hospital routinely tests dogs and cats for sensitivity to a wide array of allergens ranging from insects and grasses to trees and molds.
At Banderas Pet Hospital & Boarding we are familiar with the antigens that most commonly cause allergies in pets here in the Orange County area.
After results are received, the doctor then plans a course of injections to help desensitize your pet to the conditions causing their itching and infection.

Cancer Treatment & Veterinary Oncology
Cancer is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells. There are many different types of cancer that are found in animals. Symptoms are often similar to those in people (e.g. lumps or bumps, abnormal swelling, unexplained weight loss, listlessness, reluctance to exercise etc..)
Cancer is particularly common in animals that are 8 years or older. Early cancer diagnoses and proper treatment can improve your pet’s quality of life and help him or her to live longer with fewer complications. Detecting problems early give your pet the best chance at successful treatment and recovery.
There are many oncology options such as surgery, laser surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. In some cases we may recommend that you consult with an oncologist and assist you with a referral. We never forget that this is a challenging time for both you and your pet. We will do all we can to promote your pet’s quality of life and support you in making these difficult decisions.
If you notice any of these signs in your pet, call 949-766-4449 and ask to make an appointment with Dr. Cooper.

Cardiology
Cardiology is a veterinary clinical specialty that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of the valves and muscles of the heart. Banderas Pet Hospital offers complete cardiac evaluations utilizing digital radiography, ultrasonography, and electrocardiography (EKG).
After our initial comprehensive cardiac physical evaluation, we’ll discuss with you any additional testing or treatment that we recommend. In some cases, we may refer you to a cardiac specialist.
Discovering that your pet has a heart problem can certainly be a difficult time for a pet owner. However, it is important to find out as much about the problem as possible to begin effective treatment. The sooner treatment begins, the sooner the quality of your pet’s life is improved and the more likely we are to prolong your pet’s life through treatment and management of the problem.
If we believe there is a heart problem, performing an echocardiogram, or ultrasound of the heart, is a critical step in diagnosing the condition. An echocardiogram is a safe, non-surgical way for our veterinarians to evaluate the chambers of the heart and visualize the valves. This test can rule out or confirm a diagnosis and aid in determining the amount of leakage and the severity of an abnormality. Pending the results of this test, we may also perform blood pressure or chest X-rays.
Sometimes, the only sign that an owner may notice is a cough. Other signs you may notice in your pet are tiredness, rapid breathing, poor appetite, an enlarged tummy, pale or bluish gums.
If we are suspicious that your pet might have a heart problem, the first test we traditionally do is an x-ray and an EKG to check if the electrical system of the heart is functioning normally. If it is unclear if the heart is enlarged or if the heart is even the source of your pet's problems, a proBNP Test might be ordered. This test is especially useful in cats when we are not sure if the cat has a lung problem, asthma or a heart problem. These are all non-surgical ways to evaluate your pets heart and rule out or confirm a diagnosis.
Dogs may let us know earlier than cats that there is a problem. Owners are often unaware that their cat has a heart problem until its heart is well on its way to failing. Often the only signs in your cat are weight loss, and difficulty breathing. Cats are more likely to make asthmatic-like sounds than to have a hacking cough.
Heart disease is a combination of several problems. Early diagnosis is your pets best chance at prolonging a good quality of life through treatment and management of the problem.
If you believe your pet is experiencing a heart problem, please call 949-776-4449 and ask for an appointment with Dr. Cooper to schedule a cardiac work-up.

Endocrinology
Endocrinology is the branch of medicine dealing with hormonal imbalances in your Pet Kid’s body. Hormonal diseases can occur as a result of an excess of certain hormones, such s hyperthyroidism in cats and adrenal disease a in dogs, or as a result of a lack of hormones, such as diabetes.
Hormonal diseases can cause a multitude of clinical signs, depending on what organ is affected and whether the problem is an excess or a lack of a particular hormone.
The endocrine system of a dog or cat consists of several glands and organs that produce hormones. A hormone is a substance or chemical that when released, passes through the bloodstream and affects other organs within the body. Hormones are essential for growth and development, digestive processes and utilizing nutrients. If there are imbalances in the endocrine gland and their hormones do not function effectively, the overall health of your dog or cat would be severely affected.
Some common diseases of the endocrine system include:
Certain diagnostic tests such as blood tests to measure the various hormones in the blood, stimulating tests, serum biochemistry tests, complete blood count (CBC) and urinalysis may be needed to confirm the diagnosis.

Laser Therapy
Banderas Pet Hospital & Boarding is proud to introduce K-Laser Class IV laser therapy for your pets. Its beneficial uses include alleviating chronic pain, accelerating healing and rehabilitation plus much, much more!
No matter what kind of pet you have, large or small, dog or cat, Class IV laser can be part of or the total solution to help ease your pet's pain. Safe and effective, this powerful modality provides increased mobility, increased wound healing, and post-surgical rehabilitation.
Wound Healing: Laser therapy can significantly reduce healing time. Traumatic skin injuries and surgical incisions benefit greatly from laser intervention.
Infections: Because the laser kills bacteria as well as reducing inflammation, it can be used to reduce healing time
Rehabilitation: Musculoskeletal injuries and orthopedic surgeries often require additional rehabilitation solutions.
Although improvement is often seen after the first visit, most patients require multiple treatments for greatest benefit. For most conditions, we recommend a multi-visit treatment plan. Treatments vary in length, but most sites require only 2 to 8 minutes.
Class IV laser therapy treatments are cumulative in nature. The length and frequency of treatments varies with your pet's condition. Chronic conditions may require ongoing treatments
We will recommend a treatment plan specific to your pet's condition. The treated area usually feels better 12 to 24 hours after a Laser treatment.
There is no patient sedation or excessive restraint required and the experience is usually pleasant and comforting to the animal. As with any therapy, the patient should be kept quiet until all treatments are complete. The length of laser therapy treatments and frequency of treatments improve outcomes.

Class IV laser therapy
has been very successful in the field of human medicine for many years. We are pleased and excited to be able to offer it for the treatment of our best friends! What is laser therapy?
Photobiomodulation is the scientific term for Class IV Laser's effect on tissue. Deep penetrating photons from the laser influence cell chemistry in a variety of beneficial ways. In addition, the infrared wavelengths create a warm sensation in your pet's body at the precise location requiring treatment. Treatment time, power and laser pulse frequency are based on your pet's individual condition and body size. After surgery, patients receiving laser therapy have less pain. Their recovery is faster, with fewer complicationsWhere is it beneficial?
Pain Management: Pet owners often prefer a progressive, noninvasive therapy instead of a drug regimen for the treatment of chronic pain. Laser therapy provides that solution.Wound Healing: Laser therapy can significantly reduce healing time. Traumatic skin injuries and surgical incisions benefit greatly from laser intervention.

provide pain management before, during and after surgery.
Non-Surgical pain can be even more devastating for your pet and BPH has both medicines and Class IV Laser Therapy to help get your Pet Kid back to normal.
Acute Pain can come on suddenly in case of an injury, surgery, inflammation or infection. It can be extremely uncomfortable for your pet and it may limit his or her mobility. The good news is that it’s usually temporary.
Chronic Pain is long lasting and usually slow to develop, often it results from conditions such as arthritis (and other age related disorders), cancer, and bone disease.
This pain may be the hardest to deal with because it can go on for years, or for an animal’s entire lifetime. Also, because it develops slowly, some animals may gradually learn to tolerate the pain and live with it. This can make chronic pain difficult to detect.
Our pets can’t tell us when something is wrong so it’s important for you to take note of any change in their behavior.
Look for any of the signs your pet may be saying "I hurt."

Animals instinctively hide pain so we generally don’t hear a peep out of them until the pain is so bad they can’t hide it any more. Our pets can’t tell us when something is wrong so it’s important for you to take note of any change in their behavior.
Look for any of the signs your pet may be saying "I hurt."
- Being unusually quiet, listless, restless, or unresponsive
- Whining, whimpering, howling, or constantly meowing
- Biting
- Constantly licking or chewing at a particular part of the body * Acting funny and out of character, either aggressively or submissively

Many animals, especially cats, naturally disguise signs of pain to protect themselves from predators. If the injury, illness or experience is one that sounds painful to you, go with the assumption that it may also hurt your pet and call 949-766-4449 to make an appointment to have your pet examined.Radiology
Digital X-rays provide:
Like a digital photo, a digital radiograph can be manipulated after it is taken allowing our team to view the image and see things in ways that weren't possible with conventional film X-ray.
Digital X-rays allow Banderas Pet Hospital & Boarding to work with board certified radiologists to interpret and consult on X-ray images. Our network of radiologists interprets the films, and sends back their findings allowing us access to consistent, precise interpretations in minutes not days.
The imaging procedure is non-invasive, completely painless and can be performed on calm, cooperative pets without sedation. We may administer a light sedative or general anesthesia in cases where a dog or cat has trouble becoming fully relaxed naturally, or is in pain
Banderas Pet Hospital & Boarding uses digital X-rays to diagnose:
In pets that are “chewers” we have found a sock, small toy, rocks and even a diamond ring using radiology. Copies of X-rays can be burned onto a CD and viewed on any computer at the owner’s request.
When you see signs that your pet is in pain and you don’t know why, don’t hesitate to call 949-766-4449 and we will make an appointment for digital X-rays to see what may be going on inside your pet.
- Better, crystal clear images

Stem Cell Therapy
Regenerative Stem Cell Therapy has become increasingly more recognized for its ability to help relieve the suffering of pets. The new “In Hospital” procedure, makes the process more affordable for the many pet parents who would like to be able to offer this pain relief to their “pet kids”. We no longer have to send the tissue samples to an outside lab, wait days for them to be processed and bring your pet back to the hospital to implant the cells.
It is now a one day procedure, done at our hospital thus reducing the cost to $1800. Monetary value is always a concern especially in these trying economic times and each must make the decision based on family circumstances. We are doing all we can to make it possible for all “pet kids” to live a life free of pain.
If your pet has been suffering from osteoarthritis, hip dysplasia, ligament injuries, chronic ear infections, allergies, organ damage and many other chronic or painful conditions, this might be the time to consider Regenerative Stem Cell Therapy.
What can Stem Cell Therapy do for Your Pet Kid?
Regenerative Stem Cell Therapy uses processed cells taken from your pet’s own fat tissue to stop the pain and help the body heal itself.
How do I know if Regenerative Stem Cell Therapy is right for my pet?
The therapy was originally developed for pets suffering from osteoarthritis, hip dysplasia and ligament injuries. More recently it has also been used effectively in treating chronic ear infections, allergies, organ damage and other chronic conditions
Is an Adipose (Fat) Stem Cell Procedure Safe?
Yes…. because the fat tissue is removed from the animal’s own body there are no problems with cell rejection or disease transmission. The surgery, harvesting, and administering of stem cells are all performed in-hospital under veterinary control. The procedure is completed in just one day.
What are the side effects from an Adipose Stem Cell Procedure?
As the adipose tissue is extracted from the animal’s own body with no ‘foreign’ donors, the procedure is performed totally in-hospital, the process is entirely ‘natural,’ and there are no side effects.
Is this treatment expensive?
The cost’s involved with this treatment have dropped significantly in the past few months as more pet parents are choosing Stem Cell Therapy for their pet kids. ALWAYS discuss costs and options with your pet’s doctor before deciding on ANY type of treatment plan.
Regenerative Stem Cell Therapy offers hope for pets in pain. This is “cutting edge” medicine at Banderas Pet Hospital where our passion is “Caring for your Pet Kids”.

Ultrasound
Ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive diagnostic procedure, which, unlike X-rays, does not result in your pet’s exposure to radiation. An ultrasound machine uses sound waves to penetrate the internal organs and creates an image that is displayed on a monitor. The procedure involves using a hand-held probe on the skin above the area being studied.
An ultrasound of the heart, or echocardiogram, is the most useful test for evaluating a heart murmur in a pet. With ultrasound, a veterinarian can look inside the heart, in the chambers, and visualize the valves. This non-surgical test can rule out or confirm a diagnosis and aid in determining the amount of leakage and the severity of an abnormality. Ultrasound can be a tremendous help when obtaining a biopsy or tissue sample of an organ so the diagnoses can be made with minimal invasiveness and much less stress on your pet.
Abdominal ultrasound simplifies the diagnoses of internal disease by providing veterinarians with a clear view inside the patient’s stomach, liver, kidneys, and other internal organs.

Video Otoscopy
Video Otoscopy involves the use of a fiberoptic otoscope, inserted into the ear canal and sending a crystal clear image to high definition Monitor.
It provides the Doctor with an unparalleled view of the inside of your pet’s ear all the way to the ear drum. Because the view is magnified & illuminated so much better than with a traditional otoscope, it is possible to see through the ear drum into the middle ear.
The images produced in this examination give your veterinarian a better opportunity to view any infection, tumor or foreign body in the ear canal as well as the ability to diagnose illness in the middle ear. We use precise, miniaturized surgery instruments in conjunction with the scope, enabling the biopsy or complete removal of tumors or other diseased tissues.
Video Endoscopy can be performed without sedation or anesthesia in the exam room with the client present to also see what is going on in their “Pet Kids” ears.
Video Endoscopy is a diagnostic, non-invasive tool used by Dr. Cooper to evaluate cases of chronic ear infections as well as routinely to monitor treatment progress of ear infections. It may also be used as an alternative to surgery.
